Desde San Diego llega una de las mejores noticias musicales que han acontecido en mi vida en el último mes.Three Mile Pilot saben combinar a la perfección el sonido de bandas ochenteras como The Essence con un suficiente y aquilatado toque indie. El resultado, un sonido personal y elegante en doce temas de lo más adictivos que encuentra quizá sus mejores momentos en los cortes más nostálgicos: “What I Lose”, el agridulce “Planets” o “What's in the air”. Imprescindible.
The best musical news in the last month came into my life from San Diego.Three Mile Pilot wisely combine The Essence and alikes eighties' sound with a perfect indie touch. The output, a really personal and elegant sound along twelve highly addictive tracks culminating in the most nostalgic songs: “What I Lose”, the bittersweet “Planets” or “What's in the air”. A must.

Depeche Mode “Delta Machine”

Parece que hace tres discos (sin contar este) se inició un curioso ciclo en el que los pares no son buenos, sino mejores (véanse “Playing The Angel” y el trabajo que hoy nos ocupa) y los impares un “ni fú ni fá” (“Exciter” y “Sounds Of The Universe”, al que casi ni presté atención).Si la inspiración de Gahan y Gore (sé que existes, Fletcher) ha decidido componer una secuencia malo-bueno, eso significará que, después de desgastar “Delta Machine”, he de ignorar lo próximo que hagan y frotarme las manos para la maravilla que vendrá a continuación. Porque aún es demasiado pronto, pero el tiempo puede hacer que termine diciendo que “Delta Machine” es aún mejor que “Playing The Angel”, lo que serían, más que palabras mayores, palabras enormes. Y es que al trío le ha salido un disco cuasiredondo. Sólo pondría como pega “My Little Universe”, que me deja un poco frío entre tanto temón. Parece que hacer caso hace unos años al señor Gahan para que le dejasen componer temas fue todo un acierto: “Secret To The End”, “Broken” y “Should Be Higher” aportan al disco una riqueza que lo eleva muy arriba y, si bien varios temas recuerdan a otros tantos del “Playing The Angel”, la semejanza no pasa de ahí: si hiciste algo bueno, ¿por qué no inspirarte en ello? Personalmente me quedo con “Angel”, “Broken”, “The Child Inside”, “Soft Touch/Raw Nerve” y “Alone” (¿poquitas eh?), pero el resto, salvo la excepción mencionada, me las escucho también unas cuantas veces y tan a gusto. Así que a disfrutarlo y a exprimirlo hasta desgastarlo.
It seems that, three recordings (not including this one) ago, a curious cycle, where the “even” releases (that is, “Playing The Angel” and “Delta Machine”) are better than good and the “odd” ones (“Exciter” and “Sounds Of The Universe”) are not much more than plain.If Gahan and Gore's inspiration comes in such a sequence, that will mean that, after I outwear “Delta Machine”, I should ignore what comes next and hope for the best after. Because, even if it's still too soon, I could finish admittin that “Delta Machine” is even better than “Playing The Angel”. The trio has created something nearly full. My only complain is against “My Little Universe”, which leaves me flat in the middle of such a series of great songs. Leaving Gahan composing several years ago was a great success: “Secret To The End”, “Broken” and “Should Be Higher” enrich the work and drive it high. Although some songs resemble to “Playing The Angel”, it stops just there: not more than a resemblance. If you created something great in the past, why not taking inspiration from it? I personally choose Angel”, “Broken”, “The Child Inside”, “Soft Touch/Raw Nerve” y “Alone” but, for the rest -except the forementioned- I'll equally listen them on an on and have the best time. So, enjoy and squeeze it till the end!

Apparat “The Devil's Walk”

He de reconocer que, del trio derivado de Moderat (es decir, ellos, Modelselektor y Apparat), la encarnación musical de Sacha Ring es, en principio, la que menos (aunque muchas) simpatías me despierta. Y, aún así, he de ponerme a los pies de este alemán que, dejando de lado su faceta más “beatable”, apostó hace ya dos años por pasarse a las atmósferas y melodías y colocarlas en primer plano y dejar los ritmos en un lugar secundario. La jugada le salió igual de bien que le había salido lo anterior y “The Devil's Walk”, en el que, además, toma el micrófono para cantar sin ningún tipo de filtro intermedio, resulta ser una joya de sonido emotivo, envolvente y evocador en la que podemos encontrar perlas como “Black Water” o “Candil de la Calle”. ¡Bravo!.
I must recognize that, from the trio comprised in Moderat (what means, themselves, Modelselektor and Apparat), Sacha Ring's musical incarnation is, at first sight, the one less (even if it does a lot) appealing to me.And, even so, I must praise this german guy who, leaving aside his more “beatable” side, took, two years ago, the way of atmospheres and melodies, leaving rythms a secondary role. It was a great decision, as it had been before it, and “The Devil's Walk” (where he takes the microphone and sings without any kind of effect inbetween) is a jewel, emotional, surrounding and evoking where we can find pearls like “Black Water” or “Candil de la Calle”. Bravo!

Of Monsters and Men “My Head Is An Animal”

Va a ser que en la gélida Islandia hay vida musical en una proporción parecida a la de la cercana tierra Suomi. De la patria de Björk, Sigúr Ros, Oláfur Arnalds o Sólstafir surgió este quinteto que practica un pop-folk con tintes épicos que recuerda vagamente a los talentosos Arcade Fire. La música de OMAM suena, por un lado,a historias contadas al calor de la hoguera y, por otro, a un pop algo más happy pero siempre con un punto melancólico en el que posiblemente resida parte de su encanto. Temas sencillos pero efectivos y emotivos que dan un excelente resultado.
It seems the rate of musicians per square meter in Iceland is not far from the neighbour Finland's.From the same country of Björk, Sigúr Ros, Oláfur Arnalds or Sólstafir comes this quintet playing an epic pop-folk vaguely resembling the talented Arcade Fire. OMAM's music evokes, on one hand, stories told besides the bonfire and, on the other, a happier pop that always keeps some melancholy inside. And this is maybe part of their gift. Simple but effective songs for an excellent result.

Amplifier “Echo Street”

Después de un disco tan expansivo y complejo, a la par que bueno, como “The Octopus”, es realmente arriesgado y probablemente poco acertado intentar superarse utilizando la fórmula del “más y mejor”. Posiblemente los miembros de Amplifier conocen esa máxima y, por ello, han decidido tirar por una dirección a priori bastante diferente pero, en la práctica, realmente acertada.Y es por ello que “Echo Street” es un disco mucho más relajado y sencillo que el anterior, con claros ecos al mejor britpop de los noventa e incluso al rock progresivo de los setenta. Es posible que en ello hayan tenido algo que ver sus dos nuevos miembros, especialmente el guitarrista Steve Durose, ex-Ocesansize. El corte que abre el disco, “Matmos”, es un claro ejemplo de lo primero y de que se pueden componer temas grandes y memorables sin tener que rizar el rizo. Para muestra de lo segundo, nada mejor que “Between Today And Yesterday”, que seguro que también agradaría mucho a Steven Wilson. Entre medias, vínculos con el anterior disco (“The Wheel”) o un experimento a mi modo de ver muy bien resuelto como “Extravehicular” y unos cuantos siempre buenos temas que, de nuevo, me hacen recomendar a estos británicos. Siéntate, pulsa “play”, escucha y disfruta.
Creating a work more complex and expansive -and, of course, keeping it equally good- than “The Octopus” is a high-risk and not advisable task. Maybe Amplifier's guys know this and have chosen a different path to make “Echo Street” which is, undoubtely, different to “The Octopus” but, as it did, works really good.The new album is more relaxed and simpler than the former, with echoes to 90's best britpop (opening “Matmos”) and even to 70's prog rock (“Between Today And Yesterday”). Maybe the two new members -specially Steve Durose, ex-Oceansize- have something to do regarding this change of direction. Aside, there are, of course, links to the previous album (“The Wheel”) and a well-resolved experiment as “Extravehicular”. The rest is filled with good songs, which makes me recommend you these british guys again. Sit down, press “play”, listen and enjoy.
