Por qué: Porque Bowie es único. Porque se pasa diez años sin sacar un disco y, cuando lo hace, demuestra que ese es el momento para hacerlo. Porque para David Robert Jones no existe la edad, y “The Next Day” lo demuestra. Además, es un recorrido sonoro por buena parte de su carrera, lo que permite también engancharse a los neófitos e ir indagando en su pasado musical. Tiene temazos como “Love Is Lost”, “Valentine's Day” o “I'd rather be high” a los que uno no puede decir que no. Porque debería significar una oportunidad (o muchas) de verle sobre un escenario. Por qué no: Porque no te guste David Bowie.
Why: Because Bowie is unique. Because, after ten years in silence, he has released an album which entirely justifies the moment he has chosen -and not any other- to do it, is the perfect one. Because, for him, age means nothing, and “The Next Day” is the best possible way to demonstrate it. Also, it's a sonic trip through a big part of his career, which allows newcomers to plunge into his music and explore it backwards. It has hits like “Love Is Lost”, “Valentine's Day” or “I'd rather be high” and one cannot say “no” to them. It should mean an opportunity (or many opportunities) to see him live. Why not: Because you don't like David Bowie.

Por qué: Porque es Nick Cave, y eso significa, de algún modo, regularidad en la muestra del talento, algo no demasiado habitual en la música actual. Desde hace bastante ya tiempo el australiano no defrauda un ápice con cada nuevo lanzamiento. Muchos de los temas tienen un gancho hipnótico basado en la repetición de patrones melódicos (escúchese “Jubilee Street”) como si de un disco de post-rock se tratase. Pero para Cave la única etiqueta que cabe es su propio nombre y, tengo la impresión de que, si la base compositiva hubiese sido una rumba, el resultado hubiese sido, de nuevo, Nick Cave desde el primer momento en el que empezase a cantar. Es un disco lleno de chicha, sin paja, y bastante directo para estar hecho por quien está hecho lo que le hace ser querido desde la primera escucha. El sonido del bajo, sin duda alguna, en temas como “Water's Edge”, o “We Real Cool” y esas disonancias tan particulares de él, que podemos encontrar en el primero. Por qué no: Porque no te guste Nick Cave, en cuyo caso no encontrarás nada que haga cambiar tu opinión en este disco.
Why: Because it's Nick Cave and that means steadiness on talent showing. That is not an usual thing in music business nowadays. For quite a while this guy does not dissapoint us. Most of the songs sound hynpotic since they're based on melodic pattern repetition (pay a listen to “Jubilee Street”), as if they were post-rock songs. But for Cave's music the only appropriate label is his own name. I've the impression that, if he made a song taking a rumba as basis, it would look like Nick Cave's since the first second he started singing. It's an straight album, which helps making it loved from the first listen. The bass' sound in songs like “Water's Edge” or “We Real Cool”, and their trademark dissonances, found on the first. Why not: Because you don't like Nick Cave at all. In that case, you won't find anything that makes you change your mind.

Llevaba ya mucho tiempo detrás de esta idea y por fin he encontrado tiempo para darle vida. Radiopathyst pretende ser una iniciativa periódica que funcione a modo de "radio alternativa" cubriendo en cada edición una serie de géneros entre los que intento trazar vínculos y dando cabida tanto a grupos mainstream como underground. Espero que esta primera edición sea de vuestro agrado y os pido, por favor, que mostréis vuestra opinión bien puntuando o comentando este post.

I have been long time after this idea and, finally, i've found a moment to give birth to it. Radiopathyst tries to be a recurring initiative working as an "alternative radiostation" covering in each edition a set of genres that i think are related, containing both mainstream and underground bands. Here We Go Magic “A Different Ship”

Otra de las propuestas más interesantes que han llegado a mis oídos en los últimos tiempos proviene de Canadá. Here We Go Magic es de esas bandas realmente difíciles de clasificar dada la variedad de caminos musicales que atraviesan. “A Different Ship” comienza con sonidos industriales, arranca como folk, continúa como rock psicodélico y sigue como rock alternativo y electrónica, combinándose estos estilos hasta terminar el disco; temas diversos y conexos a la vez, con el denominador común de las voces y un sonido lo-fi bastante contenido, en la onda del trabajo de Thom Yorke en solitario. Un álbum cuya mejor virtud y mayor fuerza reside en su dualidad diversidad-unidad y en su personal sonido, sin ningún tema que resalte especialmente sobre los demás y sin ninguno que sobre. Muy merecedor de escucha.
Another remarkable proposal coming from Canada. Here We Go Magic is one of those really hard-to-classify kind of bands because they are literally crossover. “A Different Ship” begins with industrial sounds, starts as folk, continues as psychedelic rock and follows as alternative rock and electronic; those genres combine along the album; songs diverse and related at the same time, with the voice and the restrained lo-fi sound as the link between themselves, this kind of sound reminding Thom Yorke solo album's approach. A recording whose best virtue and bigger strength relies on its diversity-unity duality and it's personal trademark. No track to highlight, but no track to discard. Really deserves a listen.

Bombino “Nomad”

La sola historia del protagonista de esta reseña ya merecería que el hecho de publicar un disco fuera objeto de mención. Fugitivo y nómada de la etnia Tuareg y nacido en Niger, Omara Moctar es prácticamente un superviviente artístico a los reiterados intentos de aplacar la rebelión en Niger, donde para el gobierno, la guitarra llegó a constituir un símbolo de insumisión. Una vez puestos en antecedentes, y centrándonos sólo en la música, “Nomad” es un disco sorprendente y meritorio por capacidad para aunar el sonido folclórico tradicional de los Tuaregs con unas guitarras elécricas propias de la psicodelia, donde Jimi Hendrix es uno de los iconos de juventud de Bombino. Añádase la frescura del sentimiento superviviente en un entorno donde la violencia, las torturas y la censura son algo habitual y obtendremos un disco diferente, con gancho, energía positiva y un estupendo portal entre la música occidental y la árabe.
Only the story of this review's protagonists would deserve the publishing of this recording was a bit of news. Fugitive and nomad, member of the Tuareg ethnicity and born in Niger, Omara Moctar is an artistic survivor to the reiterated attempts to suffocate the rebellion in his home country, where, to the government, the guitar became a symbol of insubordination. Once placed in history, and putting the focus on the music, “Nomad” is an amazing and meritorius recording due to its abitilty to combine traditional Tuareg folk sound and psychedelic-like electric guitars (Jimi Hendrix is one of Bombino's youth idols). Add to this the freshness of the survivor's feeling in an environment where violence, torture and censure are something regular and you'll get a different piece of art, catchy and full of positive energy, an excellent gangway between arabian and occidental music.

Nunca debe desdeñarse un disco por no ser un prodigio de innovación o por resultar totalmente encuadrable en la moda del momento. “Clash The Truth” entra de lleno en el post-punk revival de nuestros días aunque posiblemente bastante más virado hacia el movimiento original que bastantes de sus coetáneos. Dustin Payseur sabe escribir canciones que suenan muy creíbles y están indudablemente bien hechas y, aunque yo me quedo con “Shallow” y, sobre todo, “Caustic Cross”, ello no quiere decir que el disco entero no merezca un repetido repaso.
ne must never discard an album for not being innovative or for being totally trendy. “Clash the Truth” fits totally nowadays' “post-punk revival” although it probably turns more to the original sound than most of its coevals. Dustin Payseur knows how to write songs that look and feel credible and are certainly well made. Even if i choose “Shallow” and, above all, “Caustic Cross”, you should listen the whole record several times.

Vuelven las reseñas a destiempo a Musicopathyst. Y lo hacen con una auténtica joya por parte de este cuarteto procedente de Austin, Texas, al que he leído por ahí definir como un cruce entre Nirvana y The Who.La definición no va desencaminada, ya que la música de este disco bebe tanto de las fuentes más agresivas del post-hardcore como del indie más elaborado y a su vez demuestra unas excelentes dotes compositivas y rebosa riqueza sonora, trayendo a la mente tanto al grunge de los noventa como a las óperas rock y el rock progresivo de hace tres o cuatro décadas. Podemos incluso clasificarlos como los antecesores conceptuales de lo que hoy son Arcade Fire. Emocionalmente también se trata de un disco rico, a medio camino entre la nostalgia y el Carpe Diem. El disco entero es una joya y es casi imposible dejar de escucharlo entero, pero como muestra, voy a elegir los exquisitos “Will You Smile Again”, “Rest Will Follow” o “A Classic Arts Showcase”. Una maravilla.
Out-of-schedule reviews come back to Musicopathyst! And the first one is about a gem created seven years ago by a quartet coming from Austin, Texas, which i have seen described somewhere as a mixture between Nirvana and The Who. That's not innacurate: the music in this recording feeds both on the most aggresive post-hardcore as well as on the most elaborated indie rock, showing excellent compositional abilites and sound richness. It brings to my mind ninetie's grunge as well as rock operas and 70s' progressive rock. Could we even classify them as conceptual predecessors of which today is Arcade Fire. Emotionally, “Worlds Apart” is also rich, moving from nostalgia to Carpe Diem. The whole album is a jewel and it's almost impossible not to listen to it from the beginning to the end, but i have made an effort and chosen my favs: “Will You Smile Again”, “Rest Will Follow” and “A Classic Arts Showcase”. Marvelous.
